History of Healthcare
The
advances in healthcare over the last 50 years has been phenomenal. The perception of
healthcare for someone in 1900 -vs- 1950 -vs- 1998 is radically different. The common use
of Penicillin began with World War II. The treatment of tuberculosis and hypertension
began in the 1950's. The use of intensive care units began in the 1960's and bypass
surgery came in to common usage in the late 1970's. The concept of "do
everything" is totally different now compared to 25 years ago. As the definition of
wellness and healthcare evolves, it will be difficult for individuals in society to define
their goals for healthcare.
The demographics of the United States are changing dramatically. As the baby boomers age, their demand for healthcare delivery will sharply increase. The dual pressures of the aging population and scope of healthcare possibilities will make the pressure on cost containment much more difficult for the United States. The goal for healthcare for the patient, for the family, and for society needs to be defined. It is recognized that this is an impossible task.
